Last night was the Mid Autumn Festival, a time to gather with family and friends to celebrate the end of the harvest. The city was aglow from brightly colored lanterns big and small, and yummy sweet and spongy mooncakes were everywhere.

Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice’s winning secret is its traditional recipe, featuring tender steamed chicken, fragrant rice and complex, spicy chilli sauce. Anthony Bourdain, among others, raved about this hawker stand.

I brought mine home because I wasn’t hungry yet while in Chinatown. Here’s the half that’s left for tomorrow. Cost: 8.80 Singapore dollars (a little less than $6.60 USD).

The first night of our New Zealand--Australia--Women's World Cup adventure was spent on this lovely hillside near the Bay of Plenty. I binge watched @Netflix until 10pm NZ time (3am Pacific) on the plane, and slept through to 5:30am both on the plane and this morning. I'm glad I dodged jet lag but have a feeling it'll get me on the way back to the States 🥱

Overlooking the River Main in the beautiful Franconian countryside, Wurzburg was the third place we based ourselves on our Christmas markets tour. Wurzburg’s Christmas Market takes place in the city’s historic town square. On one side is the gothic chapel of St Mary, while Wurzburg’s famous Baroque architecture adorns the remainder of the square. In the middle, you’ll find over 140 stalls selling Franconian food and drink and traditional, handmade arts and crafts from the surrounding region.

• Every market has its own unique twists. The decorations on the vendor stalls vary, the lighting around town, and even the products sold in the markets can vary a lot from town to town. Some of the unusual products we saw for sale included bolts of fabric, baskets, medical and dental tools, brushes and bird houses.

• Forty or so artisans display their wares in the festively decorated courtyard of the Town Hall on Saturdays and Sundays in Advent. The focus here is on handcrafted items that are hard to find elsewhere, and there were definitely some things we would have loved to pick up there, if everything didn’t have to fit into our carry-on only bags.

Other Things to Do

• Visit of the Residence Palace (UNESCO World Heritage Site) The former Residence of the Prince Bishops in Würzburg is the most beautiful Baroque castle in southern Germany. It was well restored after the war, and it includes a unique staircase with the largest ceiling fresco in the world and a fantastic Imperial Hall. The grounds are also interesting, even in winter.

• We also enjoyed a visit to the Marienberg Fortress. Built in the early thirteen century on grounds that once were home to an early eighth century fort, the Fortress was expanded many times during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and was restored after World War II. It’s in a beautiful spot on a hill overlooking Wurzburg and a bend in the river, and is walkable from the city center.
