Baden-Baden is located on the far western edge of Germany, 10 miles from the border with France. It was the 4th and final Christmas Market city we visited in Baden-Württemberg. Being the second smallest of the Christmas Market cities we visited (population 55k) and only a 90-minute train from Heidelberg, it was a perfect day trip.
Once known as the ‘summer capital of Europe’, Baden-Baden came to fame as the playground of 19th-century Monaco socialites. It’s a World Heritage city beautifully framed by Black Forest mountains. A setting like this is magical.
Baden-Baden has a single Christkindelsmarkt. It’s located in a park a short walk from Leopoldplatz, the town’s main plaza. This market features about 100 festively decorated huts adorned with thousands of small, twinkling Christmas lights. Those lights make hanging around until after dark a must. Without having to compete with all the lights of a big city, the Baden-Baden Christmas Market shines in all its glory after nightfall.
Beyond the Christmas Market, you will want to stroll through the lovely Altstadt (old town). There are festive displays throughout with a must stop at Löwenbräu Baden-Baden. Their display can be only be described as a Christmas extravaganza unlike any display we saw this holiday season.
