Portland Safety: While downtown Portland is quite safe, do recommend avoiding venturing north of Burnside St and east Park Ave which is basically the Chinatown / Old Town neighborhood. The area has a significant homeless population with most sidewalks lined with tents, other structures, and/or trash. Though personal risk of crime is low, the likelihood of uncomfortable confrontations is much higher than other areas of downtown. Demonstration and protests are common in the city but recommend avoiding as they can be unpredictable and have the potential for growing destructive.
